BRAIN-be
Belgian Research Action through Interdisciplinary Networks

The Council of Ministers approved on 5 October 2012, the launch of the first phase (2012-2017) of the recurrent Research Framework Programme BRAIN-be (Belgian Research Action through Interdisciplinary Networks).

The programme is organised around six themes:

  • Ecosystems, biodiversity, life history
  • Geosystems universe and climate
  • Cultural, historical and scientific heritage
  • Federal government strategies
  • Major societal challenges
  • Collections Management

and relies on the funding of two types of research projects:

  • network projects of four years with the possibility of two-year projects and
  • pioneer projects of up to two years.

The Belgian Science Policy Office is now launching the third call for network projects (axis 2, 3 and 5) and for pioneer projects.

This call will soon be published in the "Moniteur belge".

  • Universe
  • Science in support of the federal climate change adaptation plan (FAP))
  • Science in support of the European union's Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD)
  • Antarctica: exploitation of ground based atmospheric observations at the Princess Elisabeth Station

Axis 3 - Cultural, historical and scientific heritage
Cross- and interdisciplinary exploitation/valorisation of federal heritage...

  • ... applied to "Sleeping beauties"
  • ... relating to socio-cultural encounters / confrontations
  • ... relating to public, environmental and animals health issues
  • ... relating to "Belgium 1900. - The cultural, intellectual and economic power of Belgium at the turn of the 19th/20th c. (1880-1914)
  • ... relating to Food history - Research in food history

Axis 5 - Major societal challenges

  • Digital Turn
  • Transition towards a low-carbon and resource-efficient society:
    • Financing the low-carbon
    • Resource-efficient society: Circular economy
    • Inequalities and redistributive issues of transition

Information Session

An information and networking session will be held on Thursday 3rd April and Friday 4th April 2014 at BELSPO, Avenue Louise 231 Louizalaan, 1050 Brussels.
