Deze as heeft als doel de verschillende componenten van de planeet Aarde - atmosfeer, hydrosfeer, cryosfeer, vasteland - en hun interacties te beschrijven en te begrijpen.
De as biedt ruimte voor de studie naar de dynamiek en de ontwikkeling van het systeem aarde, van haar natuurlijke (minerale en hydrogeologische) rijkdommen alsook van haar reacties op menselijke en klimaat gerelateerde druk. De studie van de natuurlijke risico's en van de aan het gebruik van de natuurlijke hulpbronnen gelinkte risico's is inbegrepen. Deze as laat toe om het klimaatsysteem te begrijpen en te modelleren maar ook om te werken rond geodesie en rond spatiotemporele referentiesystemen. Het maakt de studie mogelijk van de verschillende componenten van het heelal en van hun interacties, met inbegrip van de studie van de interacties tussen de aarde en de zon, de zonnewind, de magnetosfeer en de atmosfeer, alsook de impact van de ruimtemeteorologie.
Het gefinancierde onderzoek geeft een wetenschappelijke ondersteuning aan de nationale en internationale beleidsontwikkeling met betrekking tot de behandelde thema's (met name internationale akkoorden en overeenkomsten zoals het Klimaatverdrag, de Protocollen van Montreal...). Binnen dit thema kan monitoring worden toegelaten als dit verantwoord is door de onderzoeksbehoeften.
