Accompanying committee:

Agriculture, Public health/Environment, Economic affairs (Industrial Property), Science Policy; Flemish Community, French Community, Walloon Region, Flemish Region, German Community, Brussels Capital City Region.

Objectives:

The BCCM are microbial genetic resources centres. They have the task to support and to assist in the research, development and innovation activities of the life sciences and biotechnology. The BCCM support the Belgian State in the execution of its obligations in the frame of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Budapest Treaty.

Description:

The Belgian Coordinated Collections of Micro-organisms, BCCM constitute a consortium of seven service culture collections. These seven collections preserve different types of biological material (bacteria, yeasts, fungi, mycobacteria, cyanobacteria, diatoms, plasmids and DNA libraries). The research and service activities that are based on this material lead to a better knowledge of the biological diversity and can yield some economic and social benefits as well.

The BCCM consortium aims to share the biological material of its collections, related information, as well as its experience and know-how in the field of fundamental and applied (micro)biology, to the benefit of its partners and clients in the academic and industrial communities.

The BCCM activities consist of:

• preserving and distributing biological material
o 18.000 bacteria
o 30.300 fungi
o 3.800 yeasts
o 1.900 plasmids
o 200 diatoms
o 150 mycobacteria
o 40 cyanobacteria
o 20 DNA libraries

• accepting deposits for patent purposes, being an “International Depositary Authority” under the provisions of the Budapest Treaty (BCCM/IHEM, BCCM/LMBP, BCCM/LMG and BCCM/MULC are recognised as International Depositary Authority under the Budapest Treaty and can accept deposits of biological material for patent purposes).
o bacteriën, draadvormige schimmels en gisten
o human and animal cell lines (incl. hybridomas)
o genetic material (e.g. plasmids)

• furnishing services ranging from single strain identification or characterisation to extended contract research projects

• scientific collaborations
