Context

Vijf Belgische instellingen (het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen: Departement van de Invertebraten (KBIN); het Koninklijk Museum voor Midden - Afrika, Departement Mineralogie, Petrografie and Geochemie (KMMA); Université Libre de Bruxelles, Laboratoire de Biologie Marine (ULB); Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Laboratory of analytical Chemistry and Laboratory of Isotope Geochemistry (VUB); Universiteit Antwerpen, Ecofysiologie, Biochemie en Toxicologie groep , Departement Biologie (UA)) hebben een project opgestart met als doel de validatie van mariene carbonaatskeletten als archieven van klimaatsveranderingen op wereldschaal (CALcareous MARine Skeletons).

Drie taxa werden geselecteerd als potentiële archieven: sclerosponzen, bivalven en echinodermen. Zij werden geselecteerd op basis van hun verschillende eigenschappen: ouderdom, groeisnelheid en mineralisatiepatronen. Het onderzoek wordt doorgevoerd op organismen van de noordoost Atlantische oceaan tot de Caraïben.


Beschrijving van het project

Doelstellingen

Dat sclerosponzen, bivalven en echinodermen klimaatsveranderingen opmeten is welgekend. De originaliteit van het CALMARS project ligt eerder in de nieuwe aanpak van het probleem:
- de vergelijking tussen de gegevens bekomen uit de drie verschillende taxa zal ondersteuning bieden voor de validatie van de opgemeten globale klimaatsveranderingen;
- de laserablatie technologie biedt de mogelijkheid seizoenale en zelfs dagelijkse omgevingsveranderingen te meten, afhankelijk van de gebruikte taxa.;
- het project richt zich op het beter begrijpen van de processen die de opname van de proxies controleren, met het oog op het opstellen van tijdsreeksen van oppervlakte zeewater temperatuur (SST), saliniteit, fytoplankton biomassa en productiviteit, en inhoud van sporenelementen, meer bepaald metalen.



Methodologie

De aanpak van CALMARS is gebaseerd op een combinatie van veldwerk en experimenteel werk in het laboratorium. Het veldwerk bestaat uit het regelmatig verwijderen van organismen van iedere onderzochte groep op een aantal geselecteerde plaatsen zowel in de gematigde als in de tropische zone (Noordzee, Schelde, Noorwegen, Jamaica, Kenia). Op deze plaatsen is eveneens een monitoring van omgevingsparameters zoals temperatuur, saliniteit enz. aan de gang om de opname van seizoenale verschillen in de organismen na te gaan. Staalname langsheen plaatsen met een omgevingsgradiënt geeft informatie over hoe latitudinale verschillen worden opgemeten in de organismen. Om de opnamen van temperatuur, saliniteit, enz. uit te breiden in tijd en ruimte, zal eveneens gewerkt worden op organismen uit museumverzamelingen. De proxies bestudeerd met laserablatie ICP-MS, teneinde een zeer hoge tijdsresolutie te bekomen, zijn Mg, Sr, Ba, Cd, Mn, U, B, Pb, Zn, O13Ccarb en O18Ocarb. Het effect van omgevingsveranderingen op elke taxa wordt experimenteel getest( in situ met incubatiekamers of in aquaria). De impact van het substraat en physico-chemische condities worden nagegaan aan de hand vanin-vitro en semi-in-vitro experimenten. De opname van de proxy wordt gevolgd na toevoegen van radio actieve en stabiele isotopische tracers. Deze gegevens worden vergeleken met en ondersteunen de bevindingen in het natuurlijk milieu.

Verwachte resultaten

CALMARS beoogt een verbetering en een uitbreiding van bestaande opnamen van global change in de mariene omgeving met een bijzondere interesse voor klimaatsdatabanken. Aan de hand van een netwerk van biologen en geochemici met aanvullende ervaring beoogt CALMARS:

1) een betere validatie van bestaande proxies door de experimentele studie van fysiologische en omgevingsfactoren die de opname van de proxy in de verscheidenheid van bioge carbonaten beïnvloeden;

2) De bestaande curven verfijnen via een verbetering van de recent ontwikkelde methodologieën en het produceren van hoge tijdsresolutie curven;

3) het toepassingsgebied van de bestudeerde proxies in belangrijke mate uitbreiden door vergelijking met andere biologische taxa uit contrasterende tropische en gematigde regio’s van de Atlantische oceaan. Uiteindelijk hoopt CALMARS met dit onderzoek te komen tot alom aanvaarde hoge resolutie tijdsreeksen van verschillende parameters, die van groot belang zijn in simulatiemodellen van de koolstofcyclus. Deze gegevens zullen dus gebruikt worden door andere wetenschapsnetwerken om een beter inzicht te verkrijgen in de huidige en toekomstige klimaatsveranderingen;

4) de ontwikkeling van algoritmen voor veranderingen in klimaat en omgeving.

Het opstellen en regelmatig aanvullen van een CALMARS website met uitleg over het project en de belangrijkste ontdekkingen zal zorgen voor de verspreiding van de informatie naar het publiek en de scholen toe. Het maken van een film en/of didactische CD-rom samen met pedagogisch personeel van beide instellingen (KBIN en KMMA) wordt eveneens gepland.

Activiteiten

KBIN werkt sinds lange tijd op Caraïbische Sclerosponzen (ultra - structuur en in situ metingen van de groeisnelheid). Veldwerk wordt gedaan vanuit de Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, Jamaïca.

ULB heeft een grote ervaring met biomineralisaties van echinodermen vanuit morfologisch, biochemisch, fysiologisch en omgevingsoogpunt, zowel op het terrein als in het laboratorium.

UA onderzoekt de aanwezigheid, de accumulatie en het effect van metalen op organismen die in het water leven. De effecten van omgevingsparameters op de kinetiek vande accumulatie van metalen worden eveneens bestudeerd.

KMMA en VUB-ANCH ontwikkelden samen een expertise voor sporenelementen analyse met de ICP-MS en de laserablatie ICP-MS.

VUB-GISO heeft een grote ervaring in stabiele isotopen geochemie in de context van klimaatsveranderingen en global change.
