BIOINFORMATICS CORNER |
Together with some of the major biological resource centres in Europe, the BCCM will co-operate in a new European project called CABRI (Common Access to Biotechnological Resources and Information). The purpose is to create an integrated resource information service linking the catalogue databases of different organism types, genetic material and other biological materials.
To achieve this goal, CABRI will develop a search engine allowing the user to interrogate, in one exercise, all the electronic catalogues available at the CABRI resource nodes. Using World Wide Web facilities, a common interface will be produced for this purpose (an order entry and tracking system will be included). Quality standards will be devised that cover all procedures related to handling the organisms concerned (for micro-organisms, these will be based upon the WFCC guidelines), as well as quality standards that describe the processing of information (based upon ISO 9000 standards). Education and training for users are also foreseen.
Finally, the reactions of the users will be monitored and used to produce a long-term plan for CABRI as a sustainable service.
