Reginald Lorrain is full time
professor at the Faculty of Sciences, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and head of "Laboratoire
de Glaciologie" of the Department of Earth Sciences and
the Environment of the ULB.
His research concerns glacier dynamics and is focused on the
processes operating at the ice-bedrock interface and/or at the
ice-water interface (in the case of floating ice). These studies
are mainly based on compositional analyses of ice: isotopic composition
of deuterium and oxygen 18, chemical composition in major cations
and anions, gas content and composition in carbon dioxide, oxygen,
nitrogen and methane. Ice fabrics and textural analyses are also
used. This approach of ice and glaciers leads to main global
change issues
R. Lorrain's field experience has been gained in polar and alpine
regions. Since 1970, he has spent 11 field seasons in the Arctic
(Northern Canada and Greenland) and the Antarctic (Dry Valleys)
and has participated to more than 25 field camps in the Alps
(see below)
Other duties:
- 2001- Chairman of the commission "Geology-mineralogy-physical
geography" of the National Fund for Scientific Research
of Belgium.
2001- Members of the Steering Committee of North GRIP (North
Greenland Ice Core Project).
1997-2000 Head of the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science,
