Research
Dr. Véronique SCHOEMANN obtained a thesis FRIA grant to study the sequestration mechanisms of Iron and Manganese by the marine Prymnesiophyte: Phaeocystis sp. at ESA (1992-1996). She then benefit of a 2 years EU-TMR grant on the subject: “Significance of Iron and Manganese Sequestration mechanisms by Phaeocystis colonies for carbon and trace elements cycling in Arctic waters” at the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research in the Department of Chemical Oceanography and Geology (Prof. Dr. H.J.W. de Baar). During this stay, she developed her skills in the field of trace metal analysis and her knowledge on the interaction of trace metal with phytoplankton physiology in Polar ecosystems. She has completed her PhD on the Role of Phaeocystis on the biogeochemical cycles of Fe and Mn. She participated in expeditions to both northern (April-July 1996) and southern Polar (March-May 1999) ecosystems. At present, she is working on the effect of Fe limitation on Polar microbial communities and on the role of microbiological processes in the biogeochemical cycle and bioavailability of Fe in the pelagic and sea-ice ecosystems. She is coordinating the activities of Focus 1 of the International Research initiative SOLAS (« Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study ») in topics like Fe enrichment experiments, DMS cycling and halogen chemistry.
