Organization:

  • Responsible(s) Federal Science Policy: Vanderstraeten Martine, Van der Werf Aline
  • Final decision of the Ministers Council: 7/12/1990
  • Duration of the research: 1/12/1990 - 30/9/1996
  • Budget: 13,440,786.91 EUR
  • Research projects: 27

Accompanying committee:

OSTC,Public Health and Environment, Economic Affairs, Agriculture,Transport, Walloon Region, Brussels Capital City Region, Flemish Community,French Community

Objectives:

The Belgian "Global Change" impulse programme is designed to contribute to the international research efforts being devoted to the environmental and climatic changes which are occurring on a global scale. Given the complexity of the natural processes involved, the increasing impact of human activities as well as the diversity of potential effects of a climate change, the programme is necessarily multidisciplinary in nature.

Its objectives are as follows:

1. Scientific objectives

- Gain insight into the physical, chemical and biological processes which can produce variations in the "Earth" system and their interactions.

- Develop models and methodologies to predict possible climate changes (nature, size, time) so as to be able to influence them.

- Assess the role of human activities in these changes.

- Study the direct and indirect effects of these changes.

2. Strategic objectives

- Promote the participation and integration of Belgian researchers into international scientific programmes relating to Global Change, such as :

.the IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme);
.the WCRP (World Climate Research Programme);
.the European programmes STEP (Science and Technology for Environmental Protection), EPOCH (European Programme On Climatology and Natural Hazards), MAST (MArine Science and Technology).

- Co-ordinate research efforts relating to this area on the national level (national programmes on Antarctica, remote detection, marine sciences, transport; Belgian projects within the framework of the European programmes STEP, EPOCH and MAST; Belgian contributions to the EUROTRAC project; etc.).

- Develop the scientific and technical support for the formation and implementation of an international policy in this area and of policies with respect to related areas such as the environment, energy, transport, agriculture and industry.

Description:

The research themes are the following :

- atmospheric processes which can lead to climate changes;
- biogeochemical cycles on land and in the sea;
- global modelling of the climate and the environment;
- changes of the climate and the environment in the past;
- effects of climate changes on terrestrial ecosystems, the soil, the hydrological cycle, the sea level, etc.
- social-economic aspects (support for the policy).

An overview of the projects was published by the OSTC.
