The objective of the programme is to study the protection of individual citizens within the Belgian judicial system, so as to improve the transparency and effectiveness of the judicial system and its adaptation to socio-economic, technological, and medical evolution.
The programme covers the following research topics:
-adaptation of the judicial system to socio-economic, technological, and medical trends, and protection of citizens' rights;
* internationalisation, integration, and adaptation of the national judicial system;
* social, medical, and technological trends and their consequences on the transposition into the judicial system of:
-the individual as a person with rights;
the protection of these rights;
- quality of the production of laws and rights from the standpoint of the citizen as a consumer of law:
* current meaning of the concept "ignorance of the law is no excuse";
* possibilities for improving the quality of law output and of the judicial system's output;
- the settlement of disputes and the provision of individual legal protection in the following aspects:
* legal procedures for arbitrating disputes;
* the development of attempts to settle disputes outside the law and legal protection.
