| Description nl | Dit onderzoeksproject bestudeert en herinterpreteert Augustinus’ denken over vrede en rechtvaardigheid binnen de historische context van zijn tijd, zoals hij dit formuleerde in de Donatistische controverse en De Civitate Dei. Dit onderzoek laat duidelijk zien dat de betrokkenheid van Augustinus in deze controverse en zijn De Civitate Dei essentieel zijn voor het begrijpen van zijn pleidooi voor een synergie tussen kerk en staat bij het bevorderen van vrede. Hierbij zijn we niet blind voor Augustinus’ partijdigheid, en wordt deze laatste ook aan een kritisch onderzoek onderworpen. Het verkennen van de inhoud, context en theologische themas die door De Civitate Dei lopen helpen ons om Augustinus’ invulling van vrede en gerechtigheid in het religieuze conflict met de donatisten beter te begrijpen. Op dezelfde manier analyseert dit project, door middel van een theologisch-historische en vergelijkende studie van Augustinus en de situatie van religieuze conflicten in Nigeria, de mogelijkheid van samenwerking tussen Kerk en Staat bij de bevordering van een rechtvaardig en vreedzaam Nigeria. In deze context putten we enkele inzichten uit Augustinus’ relaties met politieke autoriteiten (met betrekking tot het religieuze conflict van de Donatisten) als inspiratie voor hedendaagse oplossingen voor de religieuze conflicten die de Nigeriaanse samenleving teisteren.

| Description en | This research project critically studies and reinterprets Augustine’s reflection on peace and justice which emanated from the historical context of his time (especially within the context of the Donatist controversy and as contained in De Civitate Dei). It clearly demonstrates the fact that Augustine’s engagement with the Donatists as well as his reflection on peace and justice is essential for understanding his church-state synergy in the promotion of peace. In this regard, however, a critical assessment of Augustine’s fractional and disproportionate approach of leaning towards the Catholic side is offered. In exploring the content, context and theological themes that run through De Civitate Dei, this research further offers us rich insights about Augustine’s understanding of peace and justice in relation to the religious conflicts between the Donatists and the Catholics. In the same vein, through a theological-historical and comparative study of Augustine and the situation of religious conflict in Nigeria, this project analyzes the possibility of church-state liaison in the promotion and advancement of a just and peaceful Nigeria. In this context, we draw some insights from his involvement with state authorities (with reference to the Donatist religious conflict) in order to respond fruitfully to the disgusting situation of religious conflicts plaguing the Nigerian society.
