| Description nl | Dit project wil een vroeg 5e-eeuws werk van Augustinus van Hippo, in Iohannis euangelium tractatus (405-420 n.Chr.), Opnieuw contextualiseren door Afrikaanse patristische Latijnse preken over het evangelie van Johannes te onderzoeken. Ons team onderzoekt hoe deze 124 tractaten van Augustine hebben bijgedragen aan de voortdurende Noord-Afrikaanse traditie van prediken op Johannes tussen ca. 325-533. We promoten het gebruik van bewijsmateriaal uit zijn andere sermonen, tractaten en vertellingen - evenals vele andere Latijnse preken toegeschreven aan de tijdgenoten van Augustinus in de regio. Welke citaten van Johannes zijn het meest onderscheidend in deze teksten? Welke bewering van religieus-sociale identiteiten tonen deze preken (gebaseerd op Johannes)? Welke conclusies kunnen worden getrokken uit een vergelijking van de tractaten van Augustinus met John en de andere datasets? Onze methode is om gekozen bronnen te beoordelen op hun directe citaat uit de Latijnse bijbelse MSS, gebruik van identificerende vocabulaire en ontwikkeling van Johannijnse heologische reflecties. We passen deze onderzoeksmethode voornamelijk toe op de 124 tractaten van Augustine; maar ook aan andere preken van Augustinus, evenals aan werk van andere erkende Afrikaanse auteurs; en, ten slotte, een aantal pseudo-epigrafische of anonieme preken, waarvan wordt aangenomen dat ze een Noord-Afrikaanse oorsprong weerspiegelen. Onze keuze voor Latijnse preken als een genre is erop gericht het retorische gebruik van het evangelie van Johannes te meten, in de vorming van religieuze gemeenschappen in een gedeeld Afrikaans milieu. Deze aanpak biedt veelbelovende inzichten voor de belangrijkste bronnen die in overweging moeten worden genomen en auteurs moeten worden vergeleken.

| Description en | This project seeks to recontextualize an early 5th-century work of Augustine of Hippo, In Iohannis euangelium tractatus (AD 405-420s), by examining African patristic Latin sermons on the Gospel of John. Our team investigates how these 124 ‘tractates’ of Augustine contributed to continuous North African tradition of preaching on John between ca. 325-533. We promote use of evidence from his other sermones, tractates, and enarrationes – as well as many other Latin sermons attributed to Augustine’s contemporaries in the region. What citations from John are most distinctive in these texts? What assertion of religious-social identities do these sermons display (based on John)? What conclusions may be drawn from a comparison of Augustine’s tractates on John and the other data sets? Our method is to assess chosen sources for their direct citation from Latin biblical MSS, use of identifying vocabulary and development of Johannine heological reflections. We apply this research method primarily to Augustine’s 124 tractates; but also to other sermons of Augustine– as well as work of other recognized African authors; and, finally, to a number of pseudo-epigraphical or anonymous sermons, believed to reflect a North African origin. Our choice of Latin sermons as a genre aims to gauge rhetorical use of John’s gospel, in the religious group formation of a shared African milieu. This approach offers promising insights for the major sources to be considered and authors compared.
