| Description nl | Steden, als relationele incubatoren, vallen niet enkel te omschrijven als een infrastructuur voor sociale of economische welke zich hierbinnen ontplooien, maar zij combineren alle aspecten van het sociale leven tot een complex geheel, waarin de absolute, relatieve en relationele ruimte een actieve rol spelen. Waar de rol van de relationele ruimte binnen het stedelijk leven, wordt erkent en bestudeert door uiteenlopende disciplines welke zich richten op het stedelijke leven, bestaat er geen trans disciplinaire strategie of methode die de specifieke rol hiervan beschrijft binnen het maken van collectieve ruimte en de relationele ruimte te relateren aan de absolute ruimte. Het onderzoek legt zichzelf het doel op een trans disciplinair discours te ontwikkelen van de relationele ruimte, om een mogelijk nieuwe socio- ruimtelijke dialectiek welke multidisciplinair toepasbaar is te definiëren. Het doel is om op basis hiervan, binnen een specifieke case, de relationele ruimte, welke opereert binnen de absolute ruimte te ontrafelen. Dit kan leiden tot het verkrijgen van nieuwe inzichten, binnen zowel de bestaande individuele processen, deelprocessen, gerelateerd aan een meer al omvattend proces van het maken van ruimte. Dit dient als basis voor het ontwikkelen van strategieën en methoden voor interventies binnen collectieve ruimte. Het onderzoek zal zich richten op een casestudie in de vorm van de wijk Muide-Meulestede binnen Gent, België. Deze wijk ligt als een letterlijk schiereiland aan de rand van Gent en staat aan de start van een grootschalig ontwikkelingsproces. Deze case studie zal zowel dienen om theoretisch kader te ontplooien, als een mogelijkheid om interventies te onderzoeken in een werkelijk project. Daarnaast biedt de samenwerking met de stad Gent de mogelijkheid strategieën en methoden in de praktijk te testen en te evalueren. De resultaten van dit onderzoek zullen nieuwe inzichten en benaderingen opleveren van het sociale stedelijke weefsel en zal de voorwaarden onderzoeken die de verschillende niveaus van collectiviteit in de stedelijke ruimte definiëren en manieren voorstellen voor het interveniëren binnen de absolute ruimte.

| Description en | Cities, as relational incubators, are more than a container of physical infrastructure for social or economic processes to unfold, they combine all aspects of social life into a complex whole, in which absolute, relative and relational space are playing active roles. Where the role of the relational space within urban life is recognized and studied through various disciplinary approaches that focus on urban life, there is no transdisciplinary strategy or method to describe its actual role in the making of collective spaces and find ways to address the very relation between the relational space and absolute space (the built environment). The research is aiming at developing an transdisciplinary discourse on relational space in order to define possible new multidisciplinary socio-spatial design dialectics. The objective is to disentangle the relational space operating in the absolute space on a specific case, to gain new insights, within both the existing individual processes -sub- processes relating to a more overall process of place making. This serves as the basis for developing strategies for intervention in collective spaces. The research will focus on a case study, the district Muide-Meulestede in Ghent, Belgium. This district lies as a literal peninsula on the outskirts of Ghent and is at the start of a large-scale development process. This case study will feed the unfolding of the theoretical framework as well as contribute to explore interventions as a real- live project. In addition, a cooperation with the city of Ghent offers the opportunity to test and evaluate strategies and methods in practice. The results of this research will provide new insights and novel approaches to the transformation of the social urban fabric, as it will explore the very conditions that define different levels of collectivity in urban space and suggest ways of intervening in the absolute space.
