| Description nl | Dit project bevindt zich op het kruispunt van twee prominente verschijnselen in de Late Oudheid: religieus geweld en de opkomst van het ‘heilige’. Het bestudeert sporen van fysiek geweld (vernietiging, diefstal, enz.) gericht tegen het ‘gematerialiseerde heilige’, zoals ‘heilige voorwerpen’ (relieken, vereerde afbeeldingen) en ‘heilige plaatsen’ (kerken, schrijnen) in intern-christelijke conflicten. Het richt zich op de kern van religieus geweld, dat met name gericht is tegen het ‘aanraakbare goddelijke’. Het project omvat drie onderzoekslijnen: (I) Het reconstrueert de historische en socio-culturele dimensies van religieus geweld. (II) Het verkent de retorische motiveringen achter de literaire getuigenissen hiervan. (III) Het analyseert de conceptuele achtergrond, te weten, de rol en betekenis van geweld gericht tegen het ‘heilige’. De innoverende kracht ligt in het complexe en originele onderwerp (de combinatie ‘geweld’ en ‘heiligheid’) en de interdisciplinaire methodologie (combinatie van literaire en archeologische bronnen; en kritische evaluatie door confrontatie van dit diverse materiaal). Deze studie zal resulteren in een (I) kritische reconstructie van specifieke casestudies, (II) analyse van de ‘Sitz im Leben’ van de literaire verslaggeving, (III) beter begrip van de rol van geweld en het heilige in de Late Oudheid. Op deze wijze draagt het bij tot een wezenlijke verheldering van de taxonomie van geweld, en legt het de basis voor een gerelateerde ERC aanvraag.

| Description en | This innovative project is situated at the intersection of two prominent phenomena of late Antiquity: sacred violence and the rise of the ‘holy’. It seeks to explore specific signatures of physical violence (destruction, theft, etc.) against the ‘materialised sacred’, such as ‘holy objects’ (relics, venerated images) and ‘sacred space’ (churches, shrines) in inner-Christian conflicts. It presses forward to the ‘very heart’ of religious violence, as it targets ‘tangible divinity’. The study combines three lines of research: (I) It reconstructs the historical and socio-cultural dimensions of the violent outbreaks. (II) It explores its rhetorical exploitation by the literary witnesses. (III) It analyses the conceptual level, that is, the function, role and impact of violence towards the ‘sacred’. The proposal’s novelty arises from its complex and original topic (intersection of two fields) and from its innovative and interdisciplinary methodology (combination of literary sources and archaeological evidence, critical evaluation by confrontation of both sorts of sources). This study will result in (I) a critical reconstruction of individual cases, (II) an analysis of the literary report’s ‘Sitz im Leben’, and (III) a better understanding of the significance and impact of ‘sacred violence’ in Late Antiquity. In this way, this project will contribute to the fundamental clarification of the taxonomy of violence, and serves as a point of departure for a related ERC application.
