Description en | In this research, a High-Precision Pointing Platform (HPPP) will be designed and developed in order to improve the pointing performance of small spacecraft under which mainly microsatellites (10 - 100kg) and nanosatellites (1-10kg) are understood. These small satellites, however, still suffer from high-frequency disturbances produced by several components in the satellite. These disturbances perturb the pointing stability of the spacecraft and hence the acquisition of highquality data. The current subsystem that points the entire spacecraft is not able to counteract these disturbances. Therefore this research will supplement this subsystem with an HPPP, which is very fast controlled. All components that have to be pointed precisely (e.g. telescopes, cameras, data communication equipment) can then be mounted on this HPPP in order to obtain high pointing accuracy. The HPPP is a specific application for the space sector: it provides an answer to the demand of VRI (Vlaamse RuimtevaartIndustrie) for increasing data quality (Earth observation) and data rate (laser communication) at a reasonable price. Hence, the HPPP will be a major asset to the growing industry of small satellites and will be beneficial for Belgian companies like CMOSIS, ONsemi and QinetiQ Space. Finally, the impact of this research project is not restricted to the space industry only and will contribute to a wide range of applications as well.
