| Description nl | In dit onderzoek staat de plaats van spelende kinderen in de stad centraal (‘childhood urbanisms’); kinderen worden vaak als ‘out of place’ en ‘burgers in wording’ gezien. Enerzijds horen zij in de stad thuis, anderzijds wordt hun aanwezigheid in de openbare ruimte van de stad vaak als gevaarlijk en onveilig beschouwd. Vanwege deze ambivalente status, bestaat er sinds de negentiende eeuw een grote variatie aan stedelijk beleid en praktijken die specifiek op het spel van stadskinderen zijn gericht. Stedenbouwkundigen en architecten, pedagogen, sociologen, zakenlui, maatschappelijke organisaties, policiti en beleidsmakers, en andere professionals hebben zich de afgelopen honderd jaar bezig gehouden met het ontwerpen, aanleggen en onderhouden van allerlei soorten speelruimte. De centrale vraagstelling van dit onderzoek luidt: hoe gaat stedenbouw om met het verstrekken van speelruimte voor kinderen in het publieke domein van de Nederlandse stad? Door middel van (historische) casestudies worden sleutelmomenten uit de speeltuingeschiedenis geanalyseerd.

| Description en | This research project focuses on the place of playing children in the urban public domain (childhood urbanisms). Children are often considered as out of place on city streets. On the one hand, children belong in the city, on the other their presence in the public domain of the city is often considered as dangerous, undesirable or unsafe. Because of this ambivalent status, a wide spectrum of urban policies and practices has since the 19th century focused on devising, producing and managing urban childrens spaces. Urban planners, architects, pedagogues, sociologists, entrepreneurs, ngos, politicians, civil servancts, and many other professionals have concerned themselves with the issue of playing children in the public domain over the past 100 years. This projects research focus is how urbanism deals with the production of play space for children in the public domain of Dutch cities. Through the development of (historic) casestudies, key moments in playground history are analysed using socio-spatial theory.
