OBJECTIVES
The present project's objective is to write a monograph concerning the "demographic features of populations of foreign or immigrant origin", including a description and explanation of the geographical spread of the major nationalities present in Belgian urban areas and an explanation of how this spread evolved from 1981 to 1991 in the greater Brussels area.
TASKS
To write a Monograph on the distribution of the population according to nationality and on the features of populations of foreign or immigrant origin.
The monograph will examine the following points:
1. characteristics of the foreign population on March 1 1991;
2. comparison with the data collected in the 1981 census, with the help of the National Register data;
3. relationship between international migratory flows during the inter-census period and the foreign population figures at the two censuses;
4. the data and the trend analysis will constitute the basis of foreign population projections;
5. the spatial distribution and urban location of immigration-derived populations: identification of the major nationalities and description of their distribution at municipality level among the 17 municipalities;
6. analysis and explanation of the distribution of the major nationalities at the level of statistical sectors in the greater urban areas of Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Liège, Charleroi, and Hasselt/Genk (description of nationality distribution, analysis in terms of concentration and segregation, an explanation on the basis of indicators of socio-economic status and housing characteristics);
7. Case study of Brussels
7.1 Analysis of the immigrant nationalities pertaining to the presence of the international business world and of immigration from the third-world and Eastern European countries
7.2 Analysis of the 1981-1991 evolution
8. Analysis of the spatial distribution at municipality level of foreign inhabitants grouped according to their migratory history for the 5 major urban centres and Hasselt/Genk
The project of Prof. M. POULAIN (Minorités ethniques) and that of Prof. C. Kesteloot (Ethnische minderheiden) constitute two aspects of the same research.
