Research project SO/06/068 (Research action SO)
The Labour market is continuously changing since it is an integral part of larger social evolutions (Hakim, 1998). New forms of careers are developing and are putting aside the traditional model. The keyword for the actual discourse around forms of employment is ‘flexibility’ (Feldstead, 1999). This concept not only refers to flexible working hours (such as part time), but applies to the whole course of the career. The frontiers between professional and private sphere become shaded and more flexible. This development has consequences for the decision-making, on the organisational and the political level. A correct response to these developments requires acquiring new insights in the matter.
This research on the ‘concept of career’ wishes to sketch the mobility on the Belgian labour market and its determinants (firm related, sociological and legal). This will happen in two stages. In stage I, a labour market sociological analysis based on the data from PSBH will enlighten the various transitions on the labour market and of their determinants. Secondly, these transitions will be examine in their legal (stage II b) and firm-related (stage II a) aspects.
