Research project SS/D6/04 (Research action SS)
The long-term consequences (8 years) of prolonged unemployment is studied as a follow-up to a study into the social impact of unemployment carried out in 1984.
To this end, the same group of respondents interviewed in 1984 is studied once again. Their current living circumstances, experience in the past eight years and the school career of their children are described and analysed. The analysis will focus on the medium-term effects of unemployment, but with particular attention to the way in which the individual's specific perception of unemployment has contributed to his or her reintegration, deterioration or marginalisation.
The 1984 study offers an ideal means of revealing variations in the perception of unemployment. These variations appear particularly relevant to a policy geared towards the minimisation of social insecurity, despite fluctuations in the economic cycle and employment.
