At the occasion of the 8th International Congress for Culture Collections (ICCC8) at Veldhoven, the Netherlands, Professor Kersters was presented with the prestigious 1996 Bergey award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to bacterial taxonomy.
This prize - supported by the Bergey’s Manual Trust and William & Wilkins Cie - was first presented in 1979 to Roger Stanier, and has celebrated since then many other top microbiologists. Professor Kersters’ name is linked to over 180 refereed articles on a wide range of taxa, mainly Gram negative bacteria. In order to make classification and identification more reliable, he has been advocating the use of modern computing techniques and can be considered as a co-founder of contemporary polyphasic taxonomic research.
After the retirement of Professor J. De Ley in 1989, he became professor of microbiology at the University of Ghent and director of the BCCM/LMG bacteria collection. He contributed to the build up of a broad service portfolio and a valuable research-based culture collection with over 16 000 bacterial strains. BCCM’s colleagues, as well as the personnel from the Laboratory of Microbiology at Ghent University, would like to congratulate him with this important scientific recognition and to express their appreciation for his unfailing dedication.
