    The overall goal of the project AquaticPollutants is to strengthen the European Research Area (ERA) in the field of clean and healthy aquatic ecosystems and to leverage untapped potential in the collaboration between the freshwater, marine and health research areas. Within the framework of AquaticPollutants the Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) on Water, Oceans and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) are working closely together. A multidisciplinary approach has been set up, which brings together the research needs of the freshwater sector, the marine sector and the health sector to carry out a Joint Transnational Call (JTC) and complementary Additional Activities.     The goal of BeQCI is to introduce, evaluate and develop quantum communication infrastructure (QCI) in Belgium. A crucial task is the deployment of a quantum communication network in Belgium. The consortium unites theoretical, experimental and engineering expertise on quantum technology, bringing together different university research groups, research centers, governmental agencies and private companies. BeQCI is part of the European EuroQCI initiative. It is co-funded by the EU through the Digital Europe program and the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (Belspo) through the Federal restart and transition plan.

Biodiversity changes in African Forests and Emerging Infectious Diseases: should we worry?

    Biodiversity loss has increased significantly on the African continent, due to deforestation, bushmeat consumption, pesticide use, etc., and is predicted to continue doing so in the forthcoming decades. BIODIV-AFREID will investigate how biodiversity conditions (dis)favour transmissions of infectious agents from small mammals into human populations in African forests. It will:
    • link changes in biodiversity to changes in communities of reservoirs and the pathogens they carry;
    • link differences in these reservoir communities to human health. The study will include a variety of viruses (Arenaviruses, Coronaviruses and Hantaviruses) but will have a specific focus on two pathogens with an increasing frequency: Ebola and Monkeypox virus. Both are emerging from the African rainforest and cause major concerns for public health.

    Biodiversa+ is the European co-funded biodiversity partnership supporting excellent research on biodiversity with an impact for policy and society. It was jointly developed by BiodivERsA and the European Commission (DG Research & Innovation and DG Environment). The project is part of the European Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. One of its goals is to put Europe’s biodiversity on a path to recovery by 2030.
    The Partnership aims to connect science, policy and practice for transformative change. It currently gathers 80 research programmers and funders and environmental policy actors from 40 countries.

    By networking 34 funding agencies from 27 countries from Europe & other continents, BiodivRestore aims to promote coordinated international research on conservation and restoration of degraded ecosystems and their biodiversity, in all environments, including a focus on aquatic systems. It will strengthen research & research programmes coordination to support science-based evidence for the implementation of a relatively wide range of European and International policy initiatives, by launching two calls for proposals, promoting research collaboration across national borders & disciplines. BiodivRestore will also contribute to networking, clustering and capacity building activities for the research community in the field and enhanced synergy coordination between RDI funding programmes (national, EU, International) in the relevant research fields. Lastly, BiodivRestore will contribute to reinforce the links between BiodivERsA and the WATER JPI, to enhance their collaboration for issues at the crossroad of water resources, aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity sustainable management.

    EPICC applies a polycentric governance and environmental justice approach to investigate four selected commodity chains (cattle, palm oil, gold and tin) that ‘feed’ the European market. EPICC seeks to map the governance and power links that connect the multiple territories of production and transformation and their plural legal systems with the European regulatory, political and socio-economic space. By doing so, EPICC identifies and analyses leverage points (chokeholds) and blind spots, and sheds light on the micro and macro conditions that may facilitate the mitigation of environmental and social impacts that occur at the selected locations of production (in Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia).

    The ambition of EU-PolarNet 2 is to establish a sustainable and inclusive platform to co-develop and advance European Polar research actions and to give evidence-based advice to policymaking processes.     IS_MIRRI21 aims to implement the Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure (MIRRI) and secure its long-term sustainability. With this in mind, the mission of IS_MIRRI21 is to serve Bioscience and Bioindustry by providing (a) a broad range of high-quality biological resources and associated data, (b) long-term sustainability of microbial biodiversity, and (c) knowledge and professional development. This mission will be achieved by offering users from academia, governmental laboratories and the private sector access to a portfolio of microbial Biological Resource Centres´ (mBRC’s), services, expertise, education and training build-up and synergistically on the top of mBRC’s proficiencies. To accelerate innovative research processes in life sciences and biotechnology using microorganisms, or their derivatives, IS_MIRRI21 will set up a single-entry point portal (Collaborative Work Environmental) to promote its services, resources, expertise and knowledge transfer activities, as well as to provide access to partners´ resource associated data made interoperable for data searching and data mining. The continuously increasing knowledge will be transferred to users via expert clusters (e.g. for legal framework, for biosecurity, to support training and education programmes, information and cut edge technology, etc.). It will promote cross-disciplinary and innovative solutions (industry and academic) research collaboration through the transnational access offer (pilot study) in different microbial topics defined in pipeline services.

    The Joint Programming Initiative "Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe" (JPI Climate) is a pan-European intergovernmental initiative gathering European countries to jointly coordinate climate research and fund new transnational research initiatives that provide useful climate knowledge and services for post-COP21 Climate Action. JPI Climate is a collaboration between 16 European countries to coordinate jointly their climate research and fund new transnational research initiatives. Transnational coordination of the research base aims to overcome research fragmentation, to make better use of precious public R&D resources and to facilitate cross border collaboration between top scientists.
    JPI Climate connects scientific disciplines, enables cross-border research and increases science-practice interaction. By doing this, it is expected that JPI climate significantly contribute to underpinning the European efforts to respond to climate change.

MAGICA
MAximising the synergy of European research Governance and Innovation for Climate Action

    MAGICA aims to accelerate the development, provision and exchange of knowledge from research and innovation to inform and support policy-making and climate actions. It will do this via improved coordination of on-going and future climate initiatives at transnational, national, regional and municipal levels and more efficient use of resources.
    MAGICA will be based on circular and iterative interactions among the strategic, scientific and societal components of climate change research and innovation. A scientific arena will be created to enhance the debate and discussion within the scientific community on climate R&I priorities, that will be synthesized in a Joint Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda on climate change for ERA 2025-2034. In addition, the creation of a regular forum with European Ministries of Research and Climate and other funding bodies will foster the coordination of the different national research policies to meet the ERA-wide priorities and needs identified by the scientific community.
    A multi-directional dialogue with different relevant social actors (from policy-makers to the younger generation) will be enhanced through international conferences (e.g. ECCA2023 and ECCA2025, Climate Neutrality Forum), workshops, plain language communications and resources and other innovative formats to inform citizens but also to detect social needs concerning climate science and the transition to climate-neutrality

    In order to inform global action on biodiversity and climate protection, IPBES, IPCC and corresponding national processes were created to improve the science-policy interface (SPI) between knowledge holders and decision makers. Nevertheless, there are large differences in the capacities and experiences among countries in supporting and engaging in IPBES and IPCC processes. In addition, the knowledge systems on climate and biodiversity remain fragmented despite thematic and procedural overlaps in both domains. The aim of this project is to systematically evaluate and process existing experiences to provide other countries and stakeholders guidance and inspiration for SPI development. RESPIN will assess existing potentials and barriers to foster SPI processes around biodiversity and climate change to provide an improved access to information for decisions at EU, national and subnational levels.

    Minimising the devastating effects of climate change are more important today than ever before. Innovation is essential, and research on renewable energy is vital. As a result, researchers are focusing on the threats of climate change to Earth’s oceans. The Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership (SBEP) aims to design, steer and support a just and inclusive transition to a regenerative, resilient and sustainable blue economy. In this context, the EU-funded SBEP project will deliver solutions to strengthen EU and international science-policy interfaces in marine- and maritime-related domains of the EU Green Deal and Digital Europe strategies. It will further work to foster cooperation between European states to act and implement strategies that assist community growth and improve ocean health.

    The onset of climate change has showcased its possible damage to and impact on cultural heritage sites worldwide, leading to an mounting need for solutions for better protection. The EU-funded SD-WISHESS project will bring together 14 organisations in a bid to foster collaboration and research methods, and policies and technologies. Its aim will be to maintain, support and protect cultural heritage sites while not violating any of its member countries’ policies. SD-WISHESS is focused on the impact of water- and climate-related disasters, changes to cultural heritage sites and ways to prevent or adapt to them.
