Utiliser l'océan pour réduire la concentration de dioxyde de carbone dans l'atmosphère
Première mission du RV Belgica dans le Grand Nord
Le 26 juin 2023, une équipe internationale de scientifiques a donné le coup d'envoi de la première mission véritablement arctique du nouveau navire de recherche océanographique belge RV Belgica. Ils ont embarqué à Reykjavik, capitale de l'Islande, et passeront 16 jours dans les fjords et sur le plateau continental islandais afin d'étudier les possibilités de réduire la concentration de dioxyde de carbone dans l'atmosphère en favorisant l'altération des silicates dans l'océan. Ce processus pourrait contribuer à contrer activement le réchauffement climatique actuel.

De oceaan gebruiken om de concentratie van koolstofdioxide in de atmosfeer te verminderen
Eerste missie van RV Belgica naar het hoge noorden
Op 26 juni 2023 begon een internationaal team van wetenschappers aan de eerste echte arctische missie van het nieuwe Belgische oceanografische onderzoeksschip RV Belgica. Ze gingen aan boord in de IJslandse hoofdstad Reykjavik en zullen 16 dagen doorbrengen in de fjorden en op het continentaal plat van IJsland om de mogelijkheden te onderzoeken om de concentratie van koolstofdioxide in de atmosfeer te verminderen door de verwering van silicaten in de oceaan te bevorderen. Dit proces kan bijdragen aan het actief tegengaan van de huidige opwarming van de aarde.

Symposium ‘Carbon Cycling in Coastal Environments’ organised by the DEHEAT project on 31 August 2022 at RBINS.
The BELSPO DEHEAT project is organising a one-day symposium about carbon cycling in coastal environments on the 31st of August 2022. Covering a broad range of topics, the symposium will be a platform for networking and discussions about questions at the forefront of science. The symposium will be held in the Grand Auditoire at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS).

RV Belgica baptised by HRH Princess Elisabeth in Ghent
On Saturday 25 June 2022, the new Belgian oceanographic research vessel RV Belgica was baptised. The official ceremony took place at the Rigakaai (North Sea Port) in the godfather city of Ghent, where the RV Belgica was moored for a few days for this occasion. None other than HRH Princess Elisabeth honoured the ship by accepting to act as godmother. After pronouncing the baptismal formula « I baptise you BELGICA and wish you and your crew a safe journey. » she successfully broke a bottle of champagne on the hull.

Weekend Navire Ouvert ‘RV BELGICA’, 25-26 juin 2022, Gand
Le samedi 25 juin (matin) et le dimanche 26 juin (journée complète), le public aura l'occasion de visiter le nouveau navire de recherche océanographique belge RV Belgica dans sa ville marraine de Gand. Pour cette occasion, le RV Belgica se rendra au Rigakaai (North Sea Port, Gand) où elle sera officiellement baptisé dans l'après-midi du samedi 25 juin.

Une coopération unique et de nouveaux défis scientifiques pour le navire de recherche Belgica !
Aujourd'hui le vice-premier ministre et ministre de la Justice et de la Mer du Nord, M. Vincent Van Quickenborne, et le secrétaire d'État aux Relances et aux Investissements stratégiques, chargé de la Politique scientifique, M. Thomas Dermine, ont visité le nouveau navire de recherche belge «RV Belgica». La présence de la ministre de la Défense, Mme Ludivine Dedonder, était également prévue, mais elle a malheureusement dû s'excuser. Au cours de la visite, l'accent a été mis sur la coopération unique entre les trois domaines politiques en ce qui concerne la gestion, l'exploitation et le déploiement du navire. Une attention particulière a également été accordée aux nouveaux défis scientifiques que les scientifiques marins belges et internationaux devront relever grâce au nouveau RV Belgica. La visite a eu lieu à la base navale de Zeebrugge, le port d'attache du nouveau RV Belgica.

Een unieke samenwerking en nieuwe wetenschappelijke uitdagingen voor het onderzoeksschip Belgica
Vandaag bezochten de Vice-eersteminister en minister van Justitie en Noordzee, de heer Vincent Van Quickenborne en de Staatssecretaris voor Relance en Strategische Investeringen, belast met Wetenschapsbeleid, de heer Thomas Dermine, het nieuwe Belgische onderzoeksschip ‘RV Belgica’. De aanwezigheid van de Minister van Defensie, mevrouw Ludivine Dedonder, was ook voorzien, maar zij moest zich helaas excuseren. De nadruk lag tijdens het bezoek op de unieke samenwerking tussen de drie beleidsdomeinen met betrekking tot het beheer, de uitbating en de inzet van het schip. Bijzondere aandacht ging ook naar de nieuwe wetenschappelijke uitdagingen die Belgische en internationale zeewetenschappers dankzij de nieuwe RV Belgica aan zullen gaan. Het bezoek vond plaats in de Marinebasis van Zeebrugge, de thuishaven van de nieuwe RV Belgica.

The Flemish and Federal Government regulate the cooperation between their two research vessels
Today, BELSPO, on behalf of the Federal Government, and the EWI Department – the Department for Economy, Science and Innovation – on behalf of the Flemish Government, signed an agreement framework regarding the deployment of their two research vessels. The framework regulates the reciprocity of the use of ship-time between Federal scientific institutions and Flemish scientific research centers. It also stipulates that the RV Simon Stevin and RV Belgica will continue to be made available free of charge to a wide range of users in the future.

L'emblématique Belgica retrouve une seconde vie en tant que navire de recherche ukrainien
Le 13 septembre 2021, l'accord a été signé pour le transfert du légendaire navire de recherche Belgica des autorités belges aux autorités ukrainiennes. Quelques jours plus tard, le navire entamera son voyage vers sa nouvelle base d'attache à Odessa. Pendant ce transit, plusieurs échantillons scientifiques seront prélevés. En mer Noire, le navire continuera à faire ce qu'il fait le mieux: mener des recherches scientifiques et surveiller l'état de santé de la mer. Sur cette base, il est possible de définir des mesures qui devraient conduire au rétablissement écologique de la mer Noire.

Iconische Belgica krijgt tweede leven als Oekraïens onderzoeksschip
Op 13 september 2021 werd de overeenkomst ondertekend voor de overdracht van het legendarische onderzoeksschip Belgica van de Belgische aan de Oekraïense autoriteiten. Enkele dagen later vangt het schip de tocht naar haar nieuwe thuisbasis Odessa aan. Tijdens deze transit worden diverse wetenschappelijke staalnames uitgevoerd. Ook in de Zwarte Zee zal het schip blijven doen waar het in uitblinkt: wetenschappelijk onderzoek uitvoeren en de gezondheidstoestand van de zee opvolgen. Op basis daarvan kan men maatregelen definiëren die tot het ecologisch herstel van de Zwarte Zee moeten leiden.

Ghent becomes godfather city of the new research vessel Belgica!
The city of Ghent will be the godfather of the new research vessel. The State Secretary for Science Policy, Thomas Dermine, took this decision after consultation with the Mayor of Ghent Mathias De Clercq. The city of Ghent had already expressed its interest in becoming the godfather of the advanced research vessel. A candidacy supported by the University of Ghent, an important scientific partner of the Belgica.
