Project file - Communication study: the use of Social Media by the FSI, 2013

Commissioner

  • The committee of the Visitors observatory of the Federal Scientific Institutions commissioned this research after the question was raised by the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BIRA-IASB).

Research context

Given the increasing importance of social media, an increasing number of organisations and companies are starting to use social media such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and others for their communication and marketing. The various FSI are also eager to get onboard and are particularly using Twitter and Facebook in their communication strategy.

Aim

The first part of the study is the result of desktop research carried out to look for “good practices” of the use of social media by museums and in the context of science communication.
The second part of the report describes the results of an internal survey carried out among the FSI to see what experiences and practices are already present in the Federal research institutions and museums.
At the back a reference list and an overview of interesting websites on the subject are added.
And in attachment you can find a report made by Netway at the request of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister containing especially practical information regarding the usage of social media by the Federal administration.

Method of data collection

Desktop-research, small-scale internal survey.
