Mixed Actions

Organization:

  • Responsible(s) Federal Science Policy: Van Heuckelom Marc
  • Final decision of the Ministers Council: 15/2/2000
  • Duration of the research: 1/1/2003 - 8/2/2006
  • Budget: 2,513,483.00 EUR
  • Research projects: 4

Objectives:

The Second multi-annual scientific support plan for a sustainable development policy – extended over the period 2001-2005 – is clearly linked, as appears from the title, to the first multi-annual scientific support plan, which ended in 2001.

The SPSD II maintains the general objectives of SPSD I, namely :

- to clarify the utmost complex problematic of sustainable development;

- to collect and interpret the scientific basic information, which can give direction to the preparation of a sustainable development policy and its execution;

- to formulate proposals and to elaborate instruments in order to set up, evaluate and direct a sustainable development policy.

Description:

This plan is mainly composed of two complementary parts:

- one part "Sustainable production and consumption patterns"
- one part "Global change, ecosystems and biodiversity"

The "Mixed actions" are situated in between these two main parts. The expertise of SPSD I showed the necessity of an integrated approach for sustainable development.

These actions aim to favour the integration of social, economical and environmental dimensions by creating links between the different components of part I and part II.

By means of the "Mixed actions" interdisciplinary research projects are supported that bring together human and exact sciences in an equilibrated way, so as to give better support to the integration of the decision-making process needed for a sustainable development policy and to establish a better dialogue between sciences and society.

These research projects have to respond to a need for the integration of sector-based policies, such as environmental, energy, social, industrial and agricultural policies, forestry, fishery, resource management, transport, tourism…
