Research project UN/12/01 (Research action UN)
Within the MOST (Management of Social Transformations) framework, UNESCO has called on member states to develop case studies on the use of results of social-scientific research in policymaking.
The OSTC is financing a case study on the use of results of social-scientific research in policymaking, concentrating on the problematic of immigration, asylum and multi-ethnicity.
The reasons for focusing the case study on this problematic are:
- A great deal of research on these themes has already been financed in Belgium, by both the SPO/OSTC and other funding institutions. Much of this research has been performed (stimulated by the former Royal Commissariat for Migration Policy) since the early nineties. This period is long enough for the results of that research to have been taken into account in the policymaking process. In other words, there is sufficient empirical material available to fruitfully do the present study.
- For some years now, this problematic has stood at the top of the political agenda, where it is likely to remain for a number of years to come. The study is therefore highly relevant for present-day policymaking.
