The Royal Museum of Central Africa has grown into one of the most important and heavily visited museums in the country. This majestic building situated in the natural beauty of the Warande park in Tervuren.
The Royal Museum for Central Africa must aspire to be a world centre of research and knowledge dissemination on past and present societies and natural environments of Africa, and in particular Central Africa, to foster – among the public at large and the scientific community – understanding of and interest in this area and, through partnerships, to contribute substantially to its sustainable development.
Cultural Anthropology and History
The scientists study the languages, colonial history, ancient societies, political systems, cultural productions, music, etc. of populations from Africa or with African roots.
Biologie
The biologists study the biodiversity of various animal groups and help promote the sustainable management of Africa's tropical forests.
Earth Sciences
The researchers study mineral resources, geodynamics, surface environments and natural hazards in Central Africa.
The AfricaMuseum is a centre for knowledge and resources on Africa, in particular Central Africa, in an historical, contemporary, and global context. The museum exhibits unique collections. It is a place of memory on the colonial past and strives to be a dynamic platform for exchanges and dialogues between cultures and generations.
The museum is an international scientific authority, specialized in Africa. The rooms display a unique collection that illuminates various facets: cultural anthropology, zoology, geology and mineralogy, history and the economics of agriculture and forestry.
The ethnographical collection presents a number of exceptional masks and figures, in addition to ritual and utilitarian objects intended for hunting, fishing or music. The museum has the most extensive collection of objects from Central Africa in the world.
The collection of animals is also impressive. There is a wide variety of preserved fish and amphibians, reptiles, insects, birds and mammals, often displayed in their natural habitat.
