Deze as heeft als doel de verschillende biotische modules - bodem, vegetatie, watermassa, atmosfeer- evenals de processen die er plaatsgrijpen en de onderlinge interacties (bio- en geochemische cycli) te beschrijven en te begrijpen. Deze as beoogt eveneens de evolutie van de levensvormen, de natuurlijke dynamiek van de ecosystemen en de biodiversiteit te beschrijven en te voorspellen, alsook hun reacties op menselijke en klimaatgerelateerde druk. Het onderzoek moet de nodige wetenschappelijke ondersteuning bieden voor het beleid inzake het beheer en duurzame gebruik van de ecosystemen en de biodiversiteit. Binnen dit thema kan monitoring worden toegelaten als dit verantwoord is door de onderzoeksbehoeften.
